Our Story

Introduction:

The introduction to this story is inspired by the missional zeal of Christ Memorial Lutheran Church in South County, St Louis.  The story of Reliant is animated by Christ Memorial's desire to transform lives with the Gospel of Jesus.

Chapter 1:  A Preacher

A pastor raised on skis and snowshoes in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan ends up living in a town whose summers resemble the climate of an armpit.  But he quickly becomes accustomed to Anheuser Busch products and Cardinal baseball.

Chapter 2:  From Fraternity to Living Community

After 2 years, a small group of young adults quickly realized their Bible study was becoming a fraternity.  While they loved each other very much, they quickly realized they had to get out and meet some new people.  Community is better than club.

Chapter 3:  An American and an Irishman from Germany

Robert (the Irishman) and Bethany (the American) Millar are missionaries in Munich Germany whom we support.  While visiting us for an extended time in late 06, early 07, they imparted a missionary spirit among us.  It was like this book, called The Acts of the Apostles, where fire comes upon 12 guys and they go forth with courage and bravery into the world.  This happened to us, minus the fire.

Chapter 4:  A Sweaty Preacher and DEET

Reliant worship began in the pastor's South City backyard in June of 2007.  Dripping in the St. Louis heat and humidity and bathed in bug repellent, a group of 20 would sing till the neighbors threw tomatoes over the fence.  A wandering minstrel named Jon decides that he'll stick around long enough to lead music with this infant community.

Chapter 5:  Old Building, New Community

With the help of our church body's district, a worship venue was found that had four walls and a roof.  St. Stephens Lutheran Church in the heart of the city allowed Reliant to lease worship space on Sunday morning.  Thankfully, they've recently renovated, adding air conditioning.  This is good, since the temperature during the first service in September topped 90 degrees.  Oh, and we had a medical emergency as someone passed out.  Note to self: paramedics walking into a worship service kind of kills the mood.  Everyone's OK now.

Chapter 6:  . . . .

We're writing the subsequent chapters as we speak.  Come with us and add some ink to the story.
