Cliche Sayings for a "Not So Cliche" Time..."Something Will Come Up"

by Kendra Reuckert

After being in a “state of transition” (i.e. being unemployed) for quite some time, it seems that my feelings and thoughts are still fairly unpredictable. I wish I could say that now I “see the light” and “am fully 100% contented”, but truth be told that’s not me. I struggle. I battle. I wonder. I speculate. I hope.

Throughout these internal battles, I continue to hear cliché sayings intended for comfort and aide. Enter the “something will come up” cliché. While the initial biting back thought might question the person’s ability to truly see into the future, there is something deeper shared here.

First, it’s important to understand that the person is not claiming the ability to “see into the future”. Our focus should rather be that even if an answer to our exact prayer doesn’t materialize, doesn’t something always come up? After all, if there’s one thing I know it’s that our God is faithful. Need proof? Remember the Israelites delivered from the Egyptians then wandering in the desert? Eventually they were given what was promised. It might not have been their timing but the fact remains that they were taken to the Promised Land. Take a look at your life and how God has taken care of you thus far. He knows our deepest desires. More than that he knows what we need…even before we do.

In that time of God not addressing the specific prayer he may very well be presenting you with something else. Something can be preparation of an attitude for work later or a short term opportunity that allows for enhancement of a skillset. Whatever that “something” is, it is something that our God is working on just for you in that particular moment. Knowing the truth that God is faithful we can continue to hope or patiently expect God to be working on what we need.

As I come to a close on this article, I realize that I have previously addressed God’s faithfulness and our hope before. Being human I know that it is a message worthy of repetition because God is worthy of our hope. So know that yes, something will come up. It might not be the something we think we need or want, but it is something, because God is faithful. It is because of this that our confidence can rest in him. “Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” (Hebrews 4:16 NIV)

He will hear. He will answer. Even as we struggle, battle, wonder, speculate, and hope.
