Sermon 02-13-11 "Action Every Day"

Today we listen to Moses. In addition to being a leader of God’s people, a mediator before God, and the bearer of God’s Law, Moses was a prophet, speaking on God’s behalf. “The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you . . .” (Deut. 18:15).

Deuteronomy, which means “second law,” is Moses’ concluding sermon to a new generation of Israelites as they stood on the threshold of the Promised Land. He recaps the people’s history and reviews the commands and statutes of God. Deuteronomy is a solemn call to love and obey the one, true God. Like a father repeating the house rules with a teenager, God shows a loving forbearance with a rebellious people. C.S. Lewis wrote, “It’s not always that we need to be taught as much as we need to be reminded.” Today, with faithful attentiveness, we hear God’s call to love and obedience.
